AUTONOMOUS LA

From the beginning, GLAS has always emphasized the importance of independent animation in the United States. For this screening we defined ‘independent’ as work made without the support of commercial funding and outside of educational institutions. Work made in this context always carries an extra edge of innovation and experimentation, made for no other reason than to satiate the creator’s curiosity. This screening highlights films made by a younger generation, creating work in the epicenter for commercial entertainment, Los Angeles. Following the screening, we will have a panel discussing the importance, difficulties and successes of creating independent animation in this context.

LINEUP INCLUDES FILMS BY

Sally Cruikshank, Kirsten Lepore, David OReilly, Vincent Tsui, Allison Schulnik, David Lewandowski, Kangmin Kim, Joe Bennett, Conner Griffith, Song E. Kim

INTERMISSION

JOHN DAKER

JOHN DAKER: A live animation/musical extravaganza from our friends across the pond. John Daker isthe musical alter ego of Sophie Koko Gate, Rachel Sale, and Skillbard (Vincent Oliver and Tom Carrell). With Brand New Suits and songs, JD hopes to break america with the help of an unsavoury pixelated band member, singing songs from their new EP ‘Dubai wasLiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit’. ‘I am finding it hard to describe just how funny the computer-generated character of John Daker is. He has been animated to dance along with Sophie and Rachel to songs inspired by moments such as seeing a sexy women’s choir. John Daker is a large nosed, cornrowed, awkward creation, who they describe as a “freaky animated character who has no soul”, but I would say he definitely feels alive and an entrancing sight to watch. John Daker feels like a Sasha Baron Cohen character moulded in pixels, who would definitely look at home leaning on the counter in a suburban phone shop with his cornrows and cheesy suit.’ – It’s Nice That
